Project Mycelium

Project Mycelium is building the foundation of a sovereign internet: an open infrastructure layer where compute, storage and networking are contributed, owned and operated by independent participants worldwide. It is a new initiative led by the team behind ThreeFold, drawing on more than a decade of work in cloud infrastructure.

Overview

The next era of digital infrastructure cannot remain concentrated in a handful of hyperscale providers. As artificial intelligence workloads, sensitive data flows and critical services expand, sovereignty over where information lives and how it is processed becomes a strategic requirement for nations, institutions, communities and individuals. Mycelium is designed for that reality.

Rather than routing every workload through centralised platforms, Mycelium connects those who need capacity with those who have it. Hosters anywhere can contribute hardware, any application can rent it, and value flows back to the contributors who supply the network. The result is a planetary scale fabric that is open by default, local first by design, and structurally aligned with data sovereignty.

The architecture is built for the workloads that will define the coming decade. Processing happens close to the data, security is enforced through architecture rather than policy, and a unified data layer allows applications and intelligent agents to operate seamlessly across the network without raw data leaving the environments that own it. The outcome is lower energy use, lower operating cost and a meaningful reduction in dependency risk.

On top of this technical foundation, Mycelium enables a Cooperative Cloud Protocol: a governance and economic framework through which organisations, cooperatives and institutions can collectively own and operate the infrastructure they depend on. Capacity contributors become stakeholders, incentives align across the network, and digital infrastructure shifts from a service that is rented to a productive asset that is shared. This protocol is one expression of the broader Mycelium thesis, not its only application.

The network is already operational. Nodes are live across multiple countries, the contributor base is expanding, and the infrastructure footprint continues to grow through real deployments rather than pilots. Mycelium is now entering the phase in which the operating team for the cooperative structure is being assembled and initial funding is being secured to accelerate the next stage of global expansion.
